Transhipment is the operation of transferring goods or unit loads from one means of transport to another during carriage. It may involve both removing the cargo and placing it again on the next vehicle or means of transport.
Transhipment takes place, among others, in terminals and distribution centres and is a key element of processes such as cross-docking, where goods go directly on to further transport.
